Food for Life is a not-for-profit program run by Baptist Care NT that offers low-cost groceries to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Food for Life partners with the local churches in Darwin Region to provide space for the community mobile pantry and a café’ area. The space enables the clients to have conversations, socialize and enjoy a complimentary morning or afternoon tea.
First, clients need to be registered in the program. After the registration, clients can shop and choose from a range of products such as frozen meat, chicken, breakfast cereals, vegetables, canned goods, pasta, sauces and body care products that will only cost them $1.60 per kilogram of groceries. However, there are some products with special handling fee but still, the cost is low.
A Food for Life voucher is available from welfare organizations worth $11 (which equates approximately 7 kilos of food) and may be used to supplement the cost
For the Fiscal Year 2019-2020, Food for Life has provided 91,312 meals including the 933 hampers during the peak of COVID-19 crisis.
