DARWIN WAREHOUSE

Foodbank provides food to the agencies that support families and individuals. Food is sourced from donor companies in the Darwin area. By end of day the warehouse looks like a supermarket ready for organisations to ‘shop’.

  • 2 volunteers travel with the driver to help load and unload the vans.

Aim:

  • to maintain a clean, tidy and efficiently running warehouse
  • Assist ‘shoppers’ to have a happy shopping experience.

Duties:

  • Sort and pack food onto shelves and into the cool room and freezer once it arrives at the warehouse

Items might include various household goods and basic food throughout the year, or Christmas goods just prior to Christmas

Both light and heavy lifting may be involved.  Jobs are allocated according to physical ability and personal interest.

This role suits those with good people skills and who enjoy having a bit of fun. It is also good for those who are unable to give consistent time to volunteering but view Foodbank as a valuable and worthwhile cause.

SCHOOLS PROGRAM

A rapidly expanding Schools Program currently provides healthy meals for children at a variety of urban and remote schools during the school term. Urban schools now come to Foodbank Warehouse to shop and orders are sent to us by remote and regional schools, packed by volunteers at Foodbank and then either freighted or delivered to the appropriate address.

Volunteer Roles:

Aim:
To ensure every child in the school program is provided with a healthy breakfast.

Duties:

  • Volunteers who hold a current NT car license may be invited to drive the School Breakfast Van within the Darwin area to deliver the orders.

Schools send in orders each week. Volunteers sort and pack food from the warehouse to fill the orders.

Volunteers with basic computer skills are encouraged to do data entry which is of major importance for the keeping of good records and for government reporting and ultimately funding.

Aim:
To teach the general public and in particular students about nutrition and how Foodbank can assist those undergoing food insecurity to eat in a way that will promote health.

Duties:
SBP Education, Information and Awareness Volunteers. This involves the education of small groups such as school students. It is a new but growing aspect of life at Foodbank. This is about teaching healthy and nutritional eating and how Foodbank plays an important part in this. This duty requires an Ochre card and good communication skills especially with children.

Ability:
Both light and heavy lifting may be involved. Jobs are allocated according to physical ability and personal interest.

FOOD FOR LIFE

Food for Life is a not for profit program partnering with the local churches that provide groceries to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.  The shop offers a range of groceries such as bread, milk, canned goods, frozen items, fruits and veggies and in some areas is located in a building, and in others a bus. Clients donate $10 for a bag of groceries.  Associated with the shop is a small café that offers free morning tea, conversation, and friendship. This program is growing in both size and numerically.  We currently have 3 operational centers in Casuarina on Thursday, Ludmilla on Friday and Bachelor on alternate Fridays, with others still in the planning stage.

Volunteer Roles:

Aim:
To ensure that food and groceries are well managed, prepared and distributed to different Food for Life centers

Duties:

  • Volunteers who hold a current NT car license may be invited to drive the Food for Life van.
  • Other volunteers travel with the driver to help unload the vehicle. This also involves packing the food onto shelving and sorting it at the centre.

Sorting and Packing is done at several centres according to the day of the week and the program being run. Initially food is either packed into the Food for Life van or the Mobile Pantry for transporting to the centre.

Volunteers serve tea and coffee in the café area of each centre.

Current HR license is required for Mobile Pantry (Food for Life bus)
